Ely City retains the Cambs and Hunts Jean Wilkinson Trophy, in a closely contested final against St Ives played at Cromwell Golf Club. The Jean Wilkinson is a team competition consisting of seven singles matches played off scratch within three different handicap bands.
In the semi-final Ely faced a strong Royston team, who won the top two matches. However Ely fought back and edged ahead by winning the next three matches. Royston levelled the score at three all by winning the sixth match but Ely clinched a place in the final by winning the last match for a 4 – 3 victory.
In the second semi-final St Ives faced seasoned campaigners Bourn. St Ives won the first and third matches whilst Bourn responded with wins in the second and fourth matches. St Ives eventually sealed victory with wins in the sixth and seventh matches. The fifth match was halved giving a match result of 4½-2½.
The final was played in blustery but mild conditions. St Ives took an early lead when Kathy Cooper halved the 18th hole to finish one up against Greta Barclay. Ely then gradually took the initiative when Jane Webster levelled the scores with a 3 & 2 win over Geraldine Fleming. They edged ahead as Anne Mitchell won a close match against Trish Whittermore by 2 & 1 and Anne Anslow increased the lead when she ran out a 5 & 4 winner against Rachel Badcock. It was left to Ely’s Sue Didlick to clinch the match with a 5 & 4 win against Avis Drew.
St Ives’ Marjorie Rawlinson reduced the arrears with a 5 & 4 victory over Ros Grey. The final match was conceded with Ely’s Angie Lawrence 3 up to give Ely City victory by 5 – 2.
